Open Burn Guidelines

Open burning is allowed only when issued a permit by the Fire Marshal's Office. Permits can be obtained between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Once a burn permit has been applied for, a member of the Fire Marshal's Office will set up a time to go and inspect the site where the burning will take place and go over rules and regulations. Burning must take place in an open area where there is an adequate water supply available.

Only brush, no greater than 3 inches in diameter, may be burned. The burning of grass, leaves, construction material, trash or other debris is prohibited. Open burning will not be allowed when the Air Quality Index is rated Unhealthy or Very Unhealthy or when the Forest Fire Danger Index is rated High or greater.

After you have your permit, please follow these safety instructions while burning:

  1. Inform the Trumbull Fire Dispatch (203-459-0159) BEFORE you begin to burn.

  2. Check the weather report to ensure the day will be partly sunny and have calm winds. Keep in mind Fire Dispatch will have ultimate say as to whether burning is allowed that day).

  3. Have water accessible on site where the burning is taking place.

  4. Have the necessary tools available: rake, shovel, pick.

  5. Feed the fire gradually to maintain control of the burning.

  6. Only brush is allowed to be burned—nothing greater than 3 inches in diameter. No leaves, grass, garbage, or construction material is allowed.

  7. Inform your neighbors that you will be burning. Remember, smoke is an irritant.

  8. Respect the open burning hours of 10 AM - 5 PM.

  9. Inform the Trumbull Fire Dispatch when you have completed the burning.

  10. Follow common sense to ensure everyone’s safety.
