FAQ’s

Many of our volunteers have families, hold full-time jobs, and other commitments. We never take the time our volunteers can give for granted. If you’re wondering whether you can manage being a volunteer firefighter with you schedule, we encourage you to reach out to us where you can speak with other active members!
To be an active volunteer, we ask members to attend at least 18 drills a year (we hold drills on Wednesday evenings) attend monthly meetings when your schedule permits (second Tuesday evening of each month), and respond to alarms. -
No previous experience is needed! While some of our volunteers are paid firefighters in other surrounding cities, many of our members join with no previous experience. We pay for all necessary training. All you need to have is a willingness to learn and be a part of a team.

To start, you’ll fill out our application and will be contacted for an interview. After that, there is a background check and medical exam. After completing this process, you will be issued gear, can start attending drills, learn our apparatus, and when ready, begin responding to alarms. We issue each new volunteer a “Rookie Guide” that outlines all you need to know on getting started.

While we do have a live-in program in partnership with UNH, Trumbull is largely a home response department. While many members do duty shifts where they spend time with other members and do training at the firehouse, members do not need to do any shifts or have specific hours when they are “on call.” We use a mobile app that sends a notification when an alarm takes place and members can then go to the firehouse and respond to the alarm.
